"ity of

River

ITm~ 5.4.

TO:

FROM:

MEMORANDUM

CITY COUNCIL

STEPHEN ROHLF, BUILDING AND
ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

DATE:

SEPTEMBER 14, 1998

SUBJECT: B & Z VEHICLE

The 1998 budget included $15,000 in vehicle equipment reserves to purchase a new truck
for the Building and Zoning Department. The replacement of Department's vehicles is
roughly on a ten year cycle.

The $15,000 estimated cost was for a two wheel drive truck. For a little more a four
wheel drive vehicle can be purchased. Four wheel drive makes an immense amount of
sense for accessing construction sites from unfinished roads and as part of the city's
emergency preparedness program.

Staff received bids from Elk River Ford and Saxon Motors for a truck with the following
equipment:
· red four wheel drive pick-up
· automatic transmission
· block heater
· heavy duty battery
· AM/FM radio
· rear step bumper
· five tires
· factory air

The bid from Saxon Motors was $21,534.98 and the bid from Elk River Ford was
$17,457. These bids and the $15,000 budgeted do not include license and tax. Staff
recommends that the additional dollars be spent to purchase a four wheel drive vehicle.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
