City of
Elk - Request for Action
River O.
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 4.6
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Consent August 19, 2013 Tina Allard, City Clerk and
Annette Bonin, Senior Center Program
Coordinator
Item Description Reviewed by
Resolution Proclaiming September 2013 as National Cal Portner, City Administrator
Senior Activity Center Month Reviewed by
Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Action Requested
Adopt by motion a resolution proclaiming September 2013 as National Senior Activity Center Month.
Background/Discussion
The Senior Center as we know it today was first introduced in New York in 1943 to provide social
activities, nutritious meals, and case management to adults aged 60 and older, particularly those with low
incomes. Seventy years later,an estimated 11,000 centers are helping millions of older adults from all
walks of life to continue to thrive in our communities.
Today's senior activity centers are connecting older adults with meaningful work and volunteer
opportunities and increasing their access to valuable benefits and resources. Through evidence-based
programs, older adults are managing their health and finances, so they can continue to live in their own
homes as long as possible.
Senior activity centers, such as the City of Elk River Activity Center, are evolving to reflect a new view of
aging that empowers the people they serve. To celebrate and recognize the staff and many volunteers
who work every day to enhance the well-being of older citizens in our community, staff is asking the
Council to adopt a resolution proclaiming September 2013 as National Senior Activity Month.
Attached are some of the activities that will be held at the Elk River Activity Center in September.
Financial Impact
N/A
Attachments
• Resolution
• September Activities
P a w E A E U s r
NaA f RE]
