City of <br /> EW REQUEST FOR ACTION <br /> River <br /> TO ITEM NUMBER <br /> Mayor and City Council 4.7 <br /> AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY <br /> Consent July 1, 2013 Rebecca Haug <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By <br /> Resolution Acknowledge Contributions for the 2013 Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> Archaeological Dig, History Day, and Water Tower Restoration REVIEWED BY <br /> ACTION REQUESTED <br /> Adopt by resolution contributions to the City of Elk River for the 2013 Archaeological Dig, History Day <br /> and the Water Tower Restoration. <br /> BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION <br /> Staff requested donations to help cover the expenses of the 2013 Archaeological Dig, History Day, and <br /> the Elk River Water Tower Restoration. <br /> The 2013 Archaeological Dig took place over the weekends of June 14-16 and June 21-23 at the Bailey <br /> Point Nature Preserve thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society. The donations received <br /> were used to rent a port-a-potty and to purchase sunscreen,bug spray, and food and beverages for staff <br /> and volunteers. <br /> Donations were also used to cover the expense of having the Living History Day Society conduct a <br /> fashion show displaying 1860's dress during ArtSoup and History Day. <br /> The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) is in the early stages of fundraising for the restoration of <br /> the Elk River Water Tower,which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. <br /> Donations were received to help in this effort. The HPC plans to apply for grant funding to help cover <br /> the costs of restoration;however, the grants require matching funds.
