Mr. Justin Femrite <br /> December 4, 2012 <br /> Summary of Findings <br /> Several factors are considered when determining the number of pavement cores to be taken, including the <br /> pavement condition or visible distresses present on the pavement and the variability of the pavement depth <br /> as the cores are being completed. Pavement coring identifies what exists under the visible layer of the <br /> pavement and can give a wealth of information including depths of the pavement layers, signs of bonding or <br /> unbonding and distresses that might not be visible from the road surface. <br /> In general the core samples taken had bituminous depths ranging in depth from 2 inches to 6 inches. It was <br /> also found that the majority of the underlying material from the core samples taken was sand. Core 2 was in <br /> an area of deteriorated bituminous which was seen by visual inspection of the surface and validated when <br /> the core broke up in the hole. There was some deterioration at the bottom of Core 5. Core 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 <br /> had some underlying material that was either sandy clay or clay. <br /> Cores 1 - 10 were taken on roads where full depth reclamation with curb patching has been proposed. As <br /> was previously mentioned,the bituminous depths in these pavement cores ranged from 3 inches to 6 inches, <br /> noting also a thinner base on Irving and 4th Street. After reviewing the pavement cores,we support the <br /> recommendation of full depth reclamation with curb patching pointing out the fact that the existing base <br /> thicknesses highlighted along Irving and 4th Street may lead to thinner bases in those areas pending on the <br /> pavement design. <br /> Cores 12 and 13 showed pavement still in sound condition. These roads are being recommended to have a <br /> wear course placed on the unfinished development streets. We support this recommendation. <br /> Core 11 and Cores 14-20 were taken on roads where an overlay with an edge mill was proposed. Due to the <br /> sound quality of the cores along these roads, we support the recommendation for an edge mill and overlay <br /> along these roads. <br /> Cores 21 -23 were taken on roads where an overlay was proposed. The existing pavement along 202nd Street <br /> is showing no serious signs of distress. Due to the thin bituminous depth along this street, we support the <br /> recommendation to do an overlay on this road. <br /> Minneapolisâ– St. Cloud <br /> Equal Opportunity Employer <br />
