Elk REQUEST FOR ACTION
River
TO ITEM NUMBER
Mayor and City Council 8.1
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
General Business October 1, 2012 Clay Wilfahrt,Assistant Director of
Economic Development
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Powered by Nature Entrance Signs for City Hall Annie Deckert,Director of Economic
Development
REVIEWED BY
Cal Portner, City Administrator
ACTION REQUESTED
Authorize the purchase of two Powered by Nature signs for the City Hall entrance for$2,191.46
from the Council Contingency.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
At the September 12, 2011, EDA meeting, chandlerthinks presented the city brand plan that was
the culmination of eight months of research and work. The plan identified a brand promise,
tagline, and creative interpretations of the brand. One of those creative interpretations was to
place the brand on the monument signs at the entrance of City Hall.
Since the September 2011 meeting, the community has embraced the Powered by Nature brand.
Over 40 businesses currently utilize the brand to help promote their business, and nearly 40
residents have given written or video testimonials about the brand. The brand is catching on so
well, that an International Economic Development Council instructor recently used Elk River as
one of two examples of a community that is effectively utilizing a brand to promote itself.
The attached photo is the slide from the September 2011 branding presentation that shows how
the monument signs at the entrance of City Hall would look with the Powered by Nature logo. The
presence of the logo at the entrance of City Hall reinforces the city's commitment to the brand,
and helps publicize the image of the community. Staff obtained two quotes for the signs, and
recommends moving forward with a quote from Signs by Web for $2,191.46. The signs would be
15" tall by 32"wide brushed aluminum to match the rest of the monument sign.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Council Contingency has a current balance of$32,835. With the dollars taken out for the
signs, the balance would be $30,643.54.
ATTACHMENTS
• chandlerthinks presentation picture
• Signs by Web quote
• Impact Signs quote
p0WIAEU 0T
AUR
