Elk REQUEST FOR ACTION <br /> River <br /> TO ITEM NUMBER <br /> Mayor and City Council 6.3 <br /> AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY <br /> Awards/Recognitions/Presentations October 1, 2012 Rebecca Haug, Environmental <br /> Administrator <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By <br /> Resolution Proclaiming October as Energy Action Month Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> REVIEWED BY <br /> ACTION REQUESTED <br /> Adopt attached resolution proclaiming October as Energy Action Month. <br /> BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION <br /> During the month of October, communities across the country will be celebrating Energy Action Month. <br /> Proclaimed by the President of the United States in 2011, Energy Action Month was created to bring <br /> attention to a topic that is becoming ever more important to our nation's health, security,and well-being. <br /> Energy resources enable our most basic daily needs including producing food, fueling transportation, and <br /> powering our homes and businesses. <br /> The Energy City Commission would like to highlight local efforts and proclaim October as Energy <br /> Action Month in Elk River. During this month,the Energy City Commission will organize and support <br /> activities and events throughout the city to help residents get involved and learn about the importance of <br /> energy. It is Energy City's mission as a Commission to be a resource and educate residents about the <br /> importance of energy efficiency and conservation. They will uphold this mission during Energy Action <br /> Month by showing representation at the 10"'Anniversary of the Elk River Landfill Gas to Electric <br /> Facility, showcasing Energy City Demonstration Sites on Minnesota Renewable Energy Society's Solar <br /> Tour,holding a Business Education Event, conducting Energy City tours, reaching out to schools to <br /> offer energy education material, and organizing a city-wide energy conservation poster contest. <br /> The poster contest will encompass the city brand with the theme of"You Have the Power" and ask <br /> residents to display in their posters how they have the power to conserve energy. Posters will collect votes <br /> while posted on the Elk River Energy City Facebook page during the month of October. The poster <br /> with the most votes will be displayed around the community on the Big Belly Solar Garbage and <br /> Recycling Receptacles as well as in other media outlets. First, second, and third place winners will also <br /> receive a prize.
