MMUA's Jeff Becthold has played a key role in development
of the LMCIT /MMUA Generation operations and mainte-
nance project.
The RSG groupings are a flexible way for small members of
the LMCIT workers compensation program to meet state
and federal OSHA mandates under the guidance of MMUA
staff. MMUA helps the small cities establish a working safe-
ty committee and delivers appropriate generalized safety
training to the group throughout the year.
LMCIT /MMUA Generation operations & maintenance prop
ect. The LMCIT /MMUA generation operations and mainte-
nance program is provided at no cost to municipal electric
utility generating plants and provides the utility with an op-
portunity to gain a credit on its insurance premium. In 2011
we finished the field work on the pilot project and should
have all completed O &M documents delivered to the pilot
communities in early 2012. We have several O &M projects
planned for the next year and we look forward to working
with all of our municipal utility generating plants over the
next few years.
The O &M asset development process involves amassing all
necessary information regarding each critical component of
a generating unit. This process provides the operator with a
much deeper understanding of the equipment and the op-
erating environment, facilitates regular maintenance, and
helps ensure safe, reliable operation of your generation fa-
cilities for many years to come.
12 - 2011 Year in Review
Mutual aid. 2011 was a busy year for MMUA's mutual aid
program. In June a series of small twisters and high winds
hit Alexandria, Sauk Centre, Anoka, Elk River, Princeton and
others. In early July western Minnesota experienced an o
slaught of twisters and high winds. Tyler suffered seve
damage from a tornado, losing many homes and city build-
ings. Marshall and Redwood Falls were also hit during that
storm. Marshall soon got things back up and running, and
personnel from Marshall, along with MMUA regional safety
coordinators Jim Dolen and Bruce Westergaard raced to
help Tyler and Redwood Falls. It took many days of recon-
struction for Tyler to get back to a relatively normal level of
operations. The process of recovering from the storm re-
mains ongoing in Tyler.
We never know when disaster will strike, but we do know
that it is only a matter of time before the next one occurs.
MMUA has gained a tremendous amount of hard -won ex-
perience in responding to tornadoes, floods, and ice storms
over the years. MMUA staff is prepared to come to your
community to assist in the process of rebuilding your facili-
ties when disaster strikes. MMUA can organize and oversee
the mutual aid effort so that your staff can concentrate on
the many tasks that they will need to focus on in a disaster
recovery effort.
Mutual aid efforts often involve long, grueling days of work.
•
