The Council has the right to reject any and all quotes once received.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Preliminary concepts of the landscaping improvements at Main Street and Highway 169 include entrance
signage in the northeast quadrant of the intersection. MnDOT has noted their strong opposition to rocks
or boulders in the right of way. As the landscaping plans developed,it became apparent that an
opportunity to install blocks on the former city property remained. Any signage would be located on top
of the hill, out of the right of way.
Staff proposes a sign using stones similar to those employed by the downtown seating benches and by the
Rotary Club for park signs (most notably the River walk north of the Parish Avenue bridge). Attached to
these stones would be aluminum, backlit letters. The back lighting would wash the stones in light, with
the letters creating dark contrasts in the evening.
The attached picture shows the stones spread out, due to space constraints, these spaces would be
reduced or eliminated. Additionally, the letters would need to be sized and spaced to conform with the
sign ordinance.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The bench stones are approximately$1,000-1,500 each, and the signage is about$3,000. Electricity
would need to be extended from the city property at a cost estimated at$3,000, totaling$19,500.
Consistent with the landscaping improvements, funding would come from unspent portions of the Street
Improvement Reserve.
ATTACHMENTS
® Sign Sketch
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
P...a E0E0 9Y
N:\Public Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\08-20-2012\Signage Memo.docs
