REQUEST FOR ACTION
TO
ITEM NUMBER
Mayor and City Council
6.1
AGENDA SECTION
MEETING DATE
PREPARED BY
Work Session
August 13, 2012
erem Barnhart, Planning Manager
ITEM DESCRIPTION
REVIEWED By
Council Vision and Goal Setting
Cal Portner, City Administrator
REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
Direct staff to develop additional action steps and tasks intended to satisfy the goals of Community
Development, Beautification, Opportunities and Strategic Planning.
BACKGROUND /DISCUSSION
This report is intended as a kick -off to the 2013 -2014 Vision and Goals process. In October of 2010, the
City Council adopted the following vision statement.
Vision statement
"Abounding in Natural Beauty, Elk River is a vibrant, historic rivertown that promotes an active lifestyle in
an innovative and involved community offering unlimited opportunities."
Also in 2010, the Council adopted four goals. These goals were a focus of resources on projects
necessary to further the vision:
Goals
Innovation: Develop new programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
Community Development: Enhance community involvement and public participation through a variety of
innovative outlets.
Beautification: Have attractive welcoming streetscapes at city entrances and primary corridors. Enforce
Zoning Ordinances.
Opportunities: Foster a pro- business atmosphere that provides incentives and other opportunities for new
and existing business growth.
With these goals established, staff developed a number of action steps and tasks that once completed,
would move the city along toward satisfaction of these goals. These action steps and tasks were approved
by the Council in May of 2011. We have learned that these goals are never completed and progress can
continue to be made in these areas. That said, staff recommends that additional tasks and actions steps
be identified for the Community Development, Beautification, and Opportunities goals.
