ELK RIVER ICE ARENA — ICE SYSTEM EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
ICE SYSTEMS
General
The facility is served by two separate ice systems (including
refrigeration system and ice rink floor), one for each rink. The
ice systems for both Rink 1 and Rink 2 are direct refrigeration
type systems and were installed with the construction of the
buildings they serve, 1981 and 1997 respectively. This report
will discuss another common type refrigeration system used in
the ice industry; indirect type systems. The options for
replacing the direct ice systems, including replacing them with
indirect systems, are discussed in this section.
Definitions for each type of system are provided below:
Indirect System: In an indirect system the primary
refrigerant (R -22 for example) remains in the refrigeration
room. Heat is removed from the ice rink floor through a
secondary refrigerant (glycol /water solution for example)
that is circulated in the floor. The heat exchange between
the primary and secondary refrigerants takes place in the
refrigeration room.
Direct System: A direct refrigeration system circulates the
primary refrigerant (R -22 in this case) directly through the
ice rink floor and refrigeration system. There is no
secondary refrigerant and therefore, no secondary heat
exchange process.
Overall, both systems have been very well maintained by the
facility's operational and maintenance personnel.
UStevens 9
