Box 430
Elk River, MN 55330
(763) 441-2020
UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission David Berg—Water Superintendent
John Dietz, Chair
Daryl Thompson, Vice Chair
Allan Nadeau, Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
July 17, 2012 6.1
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
DISCUSSION:
Elk River Municipal Utilities has started a backflow protection program for the safety of our
customers. Although the regulations have been in place for a number of years, the Minnesota
Department of Health (MDH)has recently begun to verify that public water suppliers have a
program in place. We have several locations that have never been checked. Elk River Municipal
Utilities does have a program, but we will need to inspect a good number of them to be sure they
are up to date with backflow checks and that locations that require backflow prevention have
something installed to meet code. The City building department and ERMU water department
are working together to identify potential locations where RPZ's should be installed and to also
communicate with water users so that we have verification of their backflow inspections. By our
joint efforts, we will be following the rules set by the Minnesota Department of Health.
We are looking at fully resurfacing the Freeport Tower. It has been almost twenty-seven years
since it was built. Currently we are talking to a couple of engineering companies to get bids, this
way we may start the process by April 2013. This project should cost somewhere between
$700,000 to $900,000 for sandblasting, skirting and paint.
R PONEAED 81
3 © INATUREI
Reliable Public
Power Provider P O W E R E D To S e a v e
