TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Mayor & City Council Pat Klaers, City Administrator December 22, 1997 Consider Ice Arena Commission Recommendation on Arena and Rink Names The city had a contest for naming the arena complex, rink #1 (old rink), and rink #2 (new rink). The city received 22 entries and the Commission has reached a recommendation on names. The Commission opted to go with the more straightforward and simple name for the arena complex and simply call it the "Elk River Arena". The Commission purposely did not want any reference to "ice" in the arena name as in the long term the facility should be much more than just an ice arena. There were two entries with this name of Elk River Arena. The old rink has always had a variety of nicknames, the most popular of which has been "The Barn." In this regard, the Commission felt that rink #1, or the old rink, should continue with its established image and with its old working name, and is recommending to the City Council that rink #1 be named "The Barn." There were three individuals suggesting this name for the old rink. The Commission is recommending the name of "Olympic" for rink #2. This is generally based on the fact that the new rink has an Olympic size skating surface, and this sized surface does not exist in the old rink or in very many facilities in the area. In summary, the Commission is recommending that the complex be called "Elk River Arena" and that the old rink be called "The Barn" and the new rink be called "Olympic." Furthermore, the Commission recommends that the six different individuals offering these names each be offered the winning prize of a $25 savings bond or gift certificate to a store which is a Chamber of Commerce member. 13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
