Research Methodology
One-on-one interviews axe research technique in which participants axe asked to answer several
(usually 10 to 15) specific, open-ended questions during a relatively short (usually 15 to 45 minutes)
interview. In this case, past, present and potential clients, as well as parmers, developers and
builders, were asked a series of questions about the City of Elk River, its industrial development
sites, its Economic Development Agency (EDA) and its Economic Development Division, as well
as its Northwest Metro competition. The questions were modified slightly fox the different types of
respondents.
Please keep in mind that these interviews axe a form of qualitative research. As such, they axe not a
form of "statistically significant" quantitative research. In other words, these interviews do not
represent a large enough sample to state with confidence that they represent the prevailing attitudes
and beliefs of the total population of clients, parmers, developers or builders. Nox can the results be
measured numerically or analyzed statistically.
Specifically, we should not assume and say all clients, parmers, developers and builders share the
attitudes and beliefs of this small sample. However, these interviews do provide a valuable glimpse
of the attitudes and beliefs of the target population. These results can be used to define a problem,
generate hypotheses, identify causes and provide direction fox additional research. Interviews are
also relatively inexpensive and fast.
Thus, what these clients, parmers, developers and builders had to say helps us to better understand
the environment fox economic development and to provide possible direction for future marketing
efforts and/or additional research.
A4
