The Initiative Foundation offers an integrated Planning and Preservation INITIATIVE <br />Initiative that positt'vely impacts communities that are working on the F~ U N ~ATI ~ N <br />preservation of `place, space, and natural resources "throughout the fourteen <br />counties of Central Minnesota. <br />Purpose: To support citizen-based planning and activities that lead to the preservation of <br />locally-valued open space, key places, and natural resources that maintain and enhance the <br />quality of life in Central Minnesota. <br />Principles: We support: <br />• Sustainable development which recognizes that natural resources are a key economic <br />asset and quality of life indicator for the region; <br />• Citizen based planning to manage growth and change; building the infrastructure needed <br />to support a growing region, while intentionally preserving the natural qualities with <br />which the region is blessed; <br />• Fund priorities and programs will aggressively avoid duplication of resources or assets <br />offered by other conservation organizations or institutions. <br />Proeram Comaonents• <br />Specialty Workshops and Training Opportunities: The Initiative Foundation offers subject and <br />skill-specific workshops on a regular basis in response to regional trends. Recent themes have <br />included education on: <br />• Conservation design and planning. <br />• Wastewater, drinking water and storm water management infrastructure. <br />• Strategic planning and funding mechanisms for parks, trails and open space. <br />• Downtown revitalization. <br />• Control of invasive exotic aquatic plants including curlyleaf pondweed. <br />• Developing farmer's markets. <br />• Running for and serving in public office. <br />• Partnership training with the Government Training Services for members of planning <br />commissions and boards of adjustment, including workshops Local Government 101, <br />Spotlight on Subdivisions, So You're Thinking About Planning & Zoning, Environmental <br />Planning: Choosing the Besl Approach for Your Community, Site Plamiing Basics for <br />Non-Design Professionals, Your Role as a Planning Commission Member, and <br />Advanced 'Zoning Applications. <br />Resource Referral: The Initiative Foundation connects its constituents with experts through <br />direct resource referral, links on our website, and the "Conservation News You Can Use" <br />electronic newsletter.
