u~ty of

iver

MEMORANDUM

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Mayor & City Council

Lori Ziemer
Safety Committee Coordinator

November 24, 1997

Safety Committee Update

The Safety Committee is currently working with Community Recreation to organize and
sponsor a two-day Safety Camp for children. The primary purpose is to bring the
community's youngsters together to learn about safety in an open and relaxed leaming
environment.

The structure of the program will be a "camp" format - complete with counselors, teams,
songs and games - in which the kids move from module to module learning safety
concepts through an assortment of hands-on learning experiences mixed with lectures and
activities. Typical safety topics covered in the Safety Camp will include: animal, bike,
water, electrical, fire, first aid and drug awareness. More of the organizational details of
the camp are attached for your review. The close of the Safety Camp will be marked with
a graduation ceremony where the kids will be recognized for their attendance.

Everyone benefits from a Safety Camp: kids learn valuable safety information, parents
become aware of prevention techniques through their children, and the community
becomes a safer place in which to live. Moreover, children become aware that public
employees (such as police officers, fire fighters, parks and recreation personnel) are
approachable and ready and willing to help out in any situation.

As this is our first attempt at sponsoring an educational program of this type, we are
estimating program expenses to run in the range of $2,700 - $3,500. Registration fee
projections (100 kids at $15/kid) would cover approximately $1,500 of the program
budget, leaving a shortfall of $1,200 - $2,000. Because this program will be sponsored
jointly between Community Recreation and the Safety Committee, we may be
approaching the City Council at a later date to request funds of roughly $1,000 for the
City's share of this worthwhile project.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
