REQUEST FOR ACTION
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ma or and Ci Council 6.10.
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Consent Se tember 6, 2011 Police Chief Braille R. Rolfe
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Police Department Personnel Items Lauren Wi er, HR Re resentative
REVIEWED BY
Robert Thistle, Interim City ~
' ~°' 1
Administrator
ACTION REQUESTED
A. Promote Marci Springsteen from Secretary/Receptionist to Records Clerk, effective October 1,
2011 beginning at Step E of pay grade 4.
B. Authorization to begin filling the position of Secretary/Receptionist left vacant due to Marci's
promotion.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Police Department has received a letter of resignation from Kristine Thomas, who is currently
employed as a Records Clerk with the Department. Kris was hired in June of 2003 as a
Secretary/Receptionist and was later promoted to Records Clerk. She has served the City loyally for the
past eight years and has now decided to resign, effective September 30, 2011.
With the opening of the Records Clerk position, the Department would like to promote current
Secretary/Receptionist Marci Springsteen to the position of Records Clerk. Marci has been with the
Department since July of 2007 and has proven herself an efficient, hardworking employee.
With Marci's promotion, the Secretary/Receptionist position would be left vacant. The Department
would like authorization to first advertise internally within the City for potential candidates. If no
qualified candidates apply; we would then automatically advertise the position opening publically.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The overall financial impact of these personnel shifts and hiring would be to the City's advantage. We
would propose to start Marci Springsteen in her new position at Pay Grade 4, Step E. She is currently at
pay grade 3, step E. Pay Grade 4 Step D would be only a $.12 per hour pay increase. Step E would be a
$1.46 per hour increase, which we feel is more appropriate for Marci's promotion. We would expect to
start the new Secretary/Receptionist at Pay Grade 3, Step A. The City would realize a savings of
approximately $2,600.00 in 2011 due to the new Secretary/Receptionist starting at Step A.
ATTACHMENTS
^ None
N:\Public Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\09-06-2011\Secretary%20Recepdonist%20August%202011[2].doc
