REQUEST FOR ACTION
TO ITEM NUMBER
Mayor and Ci Council (, 2 ,
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Worksession Au st 15, 2011 Phil Hals, Street Su erintendent
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Purchase of Asphalt Patching Equipment Tim Simon, Finance Director
REVIEWED BY
Robert Thistle, Ci Astrator
ACTION REQUESTED
Staff requests Council approval to purchase asphalt patching equipment.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Funds are budgeted in the 2011 Equipment Replacement Fund to purchase asphalt patching equipment.
Staff recommends purchasing two patching systems. Both of these units are available on the State
Equipment contract. The patching systems staff recommends purchasing are as follows:
A Falcon 4 ton heated patch trailer that is capable of reheating asphalt chunks back into a
workable condition. Using reheated chunks saves $73.00 per ton over using a specialty
patching mix. This trailer will give us the ability to patch early in the spring before the
asphalt plants are open. The trailer we are proposing also has the ability to dump mix out of
a rear door. This reduces an accident potential because our present trailer requires that a
worker stand on the fender and shovel the mix to the rear door. "The existing patch trailer
will be sent to auction.
2. The second unit is a Schwarze Model 550 air velocity patch trailer that uses a blower driven
airstream to mix 1 /4" aggregate chips with emulsified asphalt and spray the mixture into the
hole. While the unit can be used for general pothole patching, its best application is for
patching shallow areas, such as cross cracks, trench settlements, exposed manhole castings
and the like. This will give us a second patch unit for the spring pothole season and will
provide smoother more durable patches the rest of the season.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The 2011 Equipment Replacement Fund has budgeted $100,000 to purchase the asphalt patching
equipment. The Falcon patch trailer is $34,454.36, including tax and delivery. The Schwarze Model 550
velocity patch trailer is $56,092.28, including tax and delivery. The two units will be a total of $90,546.64
ATTACHMENTS
None
Action Motion by Second by Vote
N:\Public Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\08-15-2011\Streets Trailers.docx
