Some could <br />turn up on a street near you. <br /> <br />OLLOW THE LINES on a map of a region's electric power <br />grid to the big dots where they converge. There, like spiders in <br />their webs, sit giant central generating plants, those archetypal <br />industrial landmarks whose smokestacks and cooling towers <br />are visible from afar. Advancing technology and deregulation <br />may soon alter that landscape, however, and add an overlay of <br />new little dots to the map.
