REQUEST FOR ACTION <br />TO ITEM NUMBER <br />Elk River Economic Develo ment Authori 8- <br />AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY <br /> Annie Deckert <br /> Director of Economic Develo ment <br />ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED B~/ <br />Consider Economic Development Volunteer Position Tim Simon, Finance Director <br /> REVIEWED BY <br />ACTION REQUESTED <br />Authorize staff to post for economic development volunteer position <br />BACKGROUND <br />At the March 14`" City Council meeting, Mayor John Dietz directed department heads to create a list of <br />duties that could be pursued with a volunteer and come back to the Council with volunteer positions and <br />hours needed to complete the duties. At the May 9`'' City Council meeting, the Council directed staff to <br />move forward with the preparation of volunteer job descriptions and report back to the Council upon <br />completion. Human Resources Representative Lauren Wipper will be providing an update to the Council <br />following the EDA meeting. <br />DISCUSSION <br />Working with Ms. Wipper, staff has drafted a volunteer job description for the Economic Development <br />Department. The purpose of this position is to assist the department with day to day activities and <br />special projects as assigned to support the City's vision and goals. Responsibilities of volunteer include, <br />but are not limited to: <br />• Updating and maintaining mailing lists (manufacturers, small businesses, key accounts, etc.) <br />using various resources including, but not limited to: past lists, Chamber of Commerce <br />Directories, online, etc. <br />• Update vacant/foreclosed homes tracking spreadsheet utilizing Sherburne County Sheriff <br />sales list, transfer of properties list, foreclosure reporting hotline and others <br />• Administrative duties including, but not limited to: file organization, mailings, copying, etc. <br />• Organize past and existing marketing materials in basement storage area, offices and cubes <br />• Other special research projects as assigned which may assist supporting/achieving <br />innovation, community development and opportunities. <br />Director of Economic Development will be present during all volunteer hours. Time commitment will <br />be 1-5 hours a week or as needed, to be fulfilled during City Hall hours. Some benefits to the volunteer <br />includes: gaining knowledge of government operations (specifically as related to economic development), <br />expanding knowledge of the Elk River business climate and community, relationship building and resume <br />building. <br />N:\Departments\Communiry Development\Economic Development\EDA to move\Agenda\Yeaz2011\7-11-11 Volunteer Position.doc <br />
