City of

iver

MEMORANDUM

Item # 6.6.

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Mayor & City Council

Pat Klaers, City Administr.~ato~

July 28, 1997

Liquor Store Sign

At the June 30, 1997, City Council meeting the reader board sign for the new
liquor store was removed from the agenda. The concern at that time was the
height of the LED (light emitting diode) electric reader board letters and the
readability of this sign from Highway 169. After a site visit and observation
of the proposed LED reader board on July 1, it was determined that the
proposed signage was not adequate.

The sign proposal which was found to be inadequate was far below the
budget estimate and had been redesigned from the original proposal. We are
now going back to the original proposal of an 18 inch character LED reader
board versus the 9 inch lettering we were considering in June.

In addition to looking at the 18 inch letters in an LED reader board, we also
looked at the wedgebase light bulb signage. Attached for your information
are some comments on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of
signage. The liquor store manager has reviewed the alternatives and
strongly supports pursuing the LED reader board option.

Also attached for your information is a July 17, 1997, memo from
Construction Manager Mike Parsons regarding the three options and the
original quote for the reader board signage at the liquor store. It is
recommended that the City Council select Option 3, which is the 18 inch
character LED reader board. The low bid for this option is Sign Solutions in
the amount of $15,414. This quote is also attached for your review. This
quote is still far below the original marquee message center budget estimate.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the City Council award the LED reader board
signage to Sign Solutions in the amount of $15,414.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
