ITEM 4.5.

!

City of

TO:
iver

DATE:

SUBJECT:

MEMORADUM

MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL

STEPHEN ROHLF, BUILDING
AND ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

JULY28, 1997 ,~f~

CONSIDER ADVERTISING FOR A
BUILDING INSPECTOR

Staff is requesting to replace the housing inspector, who recently resigned.
However, instead of hiring someone with housing inspection credentials, staff
would like to hire a certified building inspector. This should give us a larger
and more highly qualified group of individuals to chose from.

Further, it is hoped that the licensing of apartments can be accomplished in 5
to 7 months and that the housing inspector can give the department
additional help doing building inspections. Building permits are at record
levels. The housing inspector will also be doing fire inspection in apartments
at the same time as he/she does the housing inspection.

The former housing inspector was hired as a pay grade 12, which has a range
of $11.84 to $19.30/hr. Staff recommends the new building inspector
is hire in the same pay grade as the residential inspectors, which is a
pay grade 13 or $12.47 to $20.32/hr.

We would like to fill this position as soon as possible. Staff recommends
the Council approves motion that allows us to advertise for a
building inspector.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
