Department Updates
A Solar Energy Legacy Grant through the Department of Natural Resources has been
awarded to the Ciry. This grant will provide funding to install solar lights in the tunnel
which runs under County Road 33 along the Great Northern Trail. The installation of the
solar lights will occur in the summer of 2011.
Staff have submitted a Federal Recreation Trail grant application through the Department of
Natural Resources. This grant would secure funds to aid in the installation of drinking water
at the Hillside Ciry Park front pazking lot which would aid both general park users, as well as
races held at the Park. Notification of grant awards will be issued in June of 2011. In that
the funding would not be available until November of 2011 if awazded, the fountain would
be installed in the spring of 2012.
Staff have begun composing an Outdoor Recreation Grant through the Department of
Natural Resources Division of Parks and Trails. This grant would secure funds to aid in the
installation of lighting the four upper fields at the Youth Athletic Complex. The addition of
lights would increase playtime at the Complex, especially in the spring and fall seasons. With
the loss of one field at Oak Knoll, due to the Public Works facility expansion project, the
lighting of the four fields at the Youth Athletic Complex will aid in alleviating the demand
for athletic fields. The grant amount being applied for will be approximately $485,000. This
grant requires a 50% match from the LGU which would be included as part of the cost of
the public works facility expansion project.
In an effort to increase revenues at Pinewood Golf Course, a staff team has been assembled
to develop an updated mazketing plan. This marketing plan will incorporate traditional
methods such as ads and flyers along with newer methods such as social media. The goal is
to better educate the public on this excellent recreational opportunity.
115 applications have been received for the Parks and Recreation Director position opening.
A committee is being assembled to review the applications. Interviews aze expected to begin
over the next several weeks.
