Awards & Recognitions <br />New Brighton parks are the <br />~ n-st in the state to e tobacco- <br />Free. The city's policy prohibits <br />mbaceo use on all New Brighton park <br />property at all times with three excep- <br />tions: the wit course, except dining <br />exclusively youdh activities; the Family <br />Service Center's desi~hated outdoor <br />smoking area; and the Neighborhood <br />Center's outdoor patios and picnic areas <br />during private events. New Brighton's <br />efforts were initiated by youth who <br />wanted their parks to be tobacco-fi-ee. <br />Youth brainstormed with city staff-and <br />made presentations to the Parks Com- <br />mission and Council. IVO Roseville resident died <br />in afire-related death vh Roseville <br />during 300°_. Roseville firethhters <br />participated in hundreds of activities <br />throughout [he year to educate residents <br />about fire safety. In 3003, the fire depart- <br />went conducted more than 1,750 inspec- <br />tions of homes and businesses and taught <br />hmadreds of fire salary classes at local <br />schools, nursing homes, day cares, and <br />businesses. They also provided public <br />education programs at Roseville parks <br />and public events, and replied batteries <br />and installed smoke detectors for free <br />for senior citizens and people with <br />cGsabilides. <br />The National Association <br />of Town Watch has selected <br />~ Savage as a national award <br />winner for its outstanding participation <br />in the 30's amhua] National Night Out <br />a-ime, dnr~, and violence prevention <br />program on Aug. 5. Savage's <br />selection as a national award winner was <br />based on several a-iteria, including <br />neighborhood participation, law enforce- <br />ment involvement, promotion, and the <br />effectiveness of the event The National <br />Assodation of Town Watch recognized <br />the state of Minnesota, tying with Teaas <br />for the honor, as having die top National <br />Night Ont program in the nation. <br />Granndbreakings & Dedications <br />Shakopee celebrated the open- <br />ing of a new library and <br />~ police department facility <br />on Nov. 1~. <br />Initiatives & Services <br />As parr of its on~oino- effort to <br />promote safer, healthier, and <br />~ more energy ef6dent homes <br />fa- i[s residents, the city of Richfield <br />has teamed with the St. ['ard-based <br />American Lung Association Health <br />House program to build a new dem- <br />onstration site at 6819 Oliver Avenue <br />in Richfield. The city, through its <br />Housing and Economic Development <br />Authority (HRA), becomes the first <br />municipal government iu the U.S. to <br />work directly with national Health House <br />program, which began in Minnesota in <br />1993 and has since grown to include <br />hundreds of homes in at least 30 states. <br />The 1.~-story home, which is sched- <br />uled to be completed in March 3(104, <br />will have 1,940 finished square feet on <br />the upper level and 1,3511 square feet of <br />unfinished ex-laansion space on the <br />lower level. The Richfield HRA pur- <br />chased and demolished an abandoned, <br />deteriorated house on the Olivcn-Avenue <br />site, with the ultimate wal of building <br />the new home there. <br />Staff News <br />Eden Prairie Utility Opera- <br />tions Manager Ed Sorenson, <br />who ser~~ed the cry for 33 years, <br />received the L.N. Thompson Award <br />h-om the American Water Works <br />Association, Minnesota chapter. <br />The chapter's second highest award is <br />named fora 30-plus year employee and <br />general manager of the St. Paul water <br />utility, and reeogul2es dedication and <br />commitment to the Minnesota chapter <br />of the AWWA and to the water indus- <br />n}' profession. <br />~ Kelliher Utility Superinten- <br />dent Darrel Krogseng is <br />retiring after seven and a half <br />pears of Bernice ro the airy. Charles <br />Schultz. who has been with the cin~ <br />since Ocmber, will replace Iv-ogseng as <br />the new fill-time unlin~ superintendent. <br />'~ Jodie Torkelson is Thief <br />River Falls' new city admin- <br />istrator. Torkelson began her <br />duties Oct. 14, after moving home <br />to Thief River Falls offer 3-F years of <br />working for the federal govenmhe•nt in <br />Washing on, DC.
