Box 490
Elk River, MN 55330

RE: SPEED LIMITS ON TH 169

Dear Mr. Klaers:

As you are aware, the Governor has recently signed into law a new speed limit of 65 miles per hour
on rural divided highways. Tom Dumont, the Assistant Traffic Engineer of MnDOT District 3,
recently called me to inform me of the District's recommendation for speed limits along the TH 169
corridor. He indicated they will be recommending that the 45 mph zone which ends just north of
School Street remain intact; from School Street to 197th Avenue, MnDOT will be recommending
that this stretch remain at 55 mph; and from north of 197th, the recommendation will be to raise
the speed limit to 65 mph.

When Chief Zerwas and I first talked to Tom Dumont regarding this issue, he felt that there would
be a recommendation to raise the 45 mph to at least 50 and perhaps 55 mph. Therefore, the
current MnDOT recommendation seems to be a win for the City of Elk River, in that the 45 mph
zone is remaining intact.

If you or the Council have any questions regarding this issue, I think it would certainly be
reasonable to include this as a discussion item on July 2nd when we have the MnDOT personnel
down at the City.

Sincerely,

HOWARD R.
