Central MN Regional Parks and Trails Project <br />Project Number: <br />Project Name: Great Northern Trail <br />Contact: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director, City of Elk River <br />Project Cost: $400,000 (Engineering, Construction, Contingency) <br />Request: $200,000 <br />Description: Pave the abandoned rail bed from County Road 33 north to the Elk River city <br />limits. Includes a pedestrian tunnel below grade at CR 33. First phase was <br />completed in 1997. <br />Features: Completion of this 2.65-mile trail segment would create a 5.5-mile trail from the <br />City limits on the north to historic downtown Elk River. In conjunction with the <br />trail, development of Sherburne County this trail has the potential to become a <br />regional trail between Princeton and Elk River. Good and high quality woodland <br />communities surround much of the proposed route. <br />
