•
•
It works like this: Our design team comes to your
site and sets up a design studio for the duration of
the charrette. An agenda is agreed upon prior to
the team's arrival, and appropriate stakeholders are
invited to participate in a series of small- and large-
group meetings.
The end product is a strong, clearly defined design
that pleases all participants. Depending on the scale
of the project, it can include floor plans and sketches
of key design features, including recommendations
for interior colors, finishes and furnishings. The goal
of a charrette is to have everyone who cares about
the project get involved and be able to see their
influence in the end product.
When is a charrette useful?
It's most useful when an administrator or manager
needs a design solution and would like timely
professional assistance to provide a design and
facilitate stakeholder participation in defining the
problem and solution.
The project could be large or small. An example of
an SJA charrette involved a $300,000 renovation of
the Mechanical Engineering Department at Michigan
Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. We
have experience in larger projects also, including the
new $26 million library at the University of Minnesota
- Duluth and the $21 million Mechanical Engineering
Department at the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis.
The charrette process is useful for building support
and rapport within the faculty of the department
involved, because it is a participatory process and
all stakeholders are involved in designing the space.
Consensus decision making is the rule, and all ideas
are considered at the onset. This process ensures a
positive outcome.
An SJA
charrette can
save you time,
money and
stress.
A charrette
proceeds in
an orderly way
to its goals:
consensus
and a quality
design.
t
r
Our process
involves project
~€ stakeholders,
tapping their
ideas while
~ building their
support.
A charrette can
jump-start a
process and get
it going in the
right direction.
A charrette
helps to
achieve
two things:
qualit~r design
and client
satisfaction.

~-
~ , _~x. ;,
.-*
-~ ~ - , 1 r
