1978-present -The Park District and various interests have explored the possibility <br />of re-establishing hydropower at the dam as a way to reduce taxpayers' liability for <br />ongoing maintenance and repairs. While various entities have evaluated the <br />economic viability as a business investment, no party has ever applied for a federal <br />permit to develop hydropower. <br />1992 -The DNR inspected and closed the pedestrian walkway dine to structural <br />deficiencies. The Park District commenced planning efforts to repair the dam and <br />walkway. <br />1994 -The Park District and Anoka County entered into alease/purchase <br />agreement whereby the County would pay $75,000 per year for 30 years to <br />purchase the improved park property on the east side of the river (214 of the <br />original 225 acres donated by NSP). As part of the agreement, the Park District <br />placed the $75,000, matched by another $75,000 per year of Park District funds, <br />into a Coon Rapids Dam Improvement Fund. <br />1995-1996 -The original steel gate system and the walkway across the dam were <br />replaced at a cost of approximately $6 million. The new °rubber bag" gate system <br />was chosen because it was supposed to allow ice to more freely pass aver the bags <br />during the winter. <br />2001 -The rubber gates were replaced under warranty due to a manufacturing <br />flaw. <br />2004-2005 -The first scour hole was discovered and repaired. <br />2005-2009 - Repair of the rubber gates has been an ongoing issue. <br />Late 2009 -Second scour hole was discovered. <br />
