Highway 169 Fence Fund Established In response to concern for the safety of area residents, the Chamber has formed the Highway 169 Task Force, chaired by Jerry Hagen of Sax Food & Drug. "The task force is interacting with all resources on parallel courses of action to begin resolving the problem of pedestrian safety," Hagen stated. "In communications between the City of Elk River and MnDOT, fencing was one of seven items proposed to improve safety. The task force has identified a fence as the top priority in an incremental and sequential plan, with the other six items being incorporated after a MnDOT study currently underway is completed." "The City of Elk River will be scheduling neighborhood and commercial interest meetings for public involvement in the project to fence 1.25 miles of Highway 169 between Main Street and 193rd Avenue." "Because funding and time are both critical issues, the task force has established a fence fund in a trust depository that will immediately be available to receive contributions and donations from any source." "We issue a direct challenge to each Chamber member to sponsor a 10-foot section of fence (current estimates $120). It will take public contributions to get the total job done. This is an ambitious goal, as MnDOT puts fence costs as high as $180,000." "This is where Chamber members can also help. Through the normal course of doing business, they can promote the fund by devising ways to make it easy for customers to join in." "It is extremely important to get funding in place for spring or summer construction. We believe this timeline can be met and safety is going to come sooner through these efforts because of the support we expect from the governmental sector." "Although we're focusing on this short term goal, we'll continue long range plans to work toward the total, optimal safety solution." Chamber members are encouraged to join efforts and participate. Communities are significantly impacted by the dollars that tourists spend. To capitalize on our potential tourism market, your Chamber has joined other organizations to form the Sherburne County Tourism Committee. We have been working together to develop an inventory of each community's resources. One of the results of this work will be a publication to be used by our residents and visitors as a guide to the many tourism opportunities in Sherburne County. The publication is still in the planning stage; contents will likely include area attractions, an events calendar, and information on recreation, lodging and dining. This project is spearheaded by Michael Darger, Economic Development Coordinator under the auspices of the Sherburne County Economic Development Alliance.
