Item # 5.1.
diver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Lori Johnson, City Administrator
DATE: October I I, 2010
SUBJECT: Visioning and Goals
At Monday's work session staff will present the proposed Elk River vision statement and
supporting goals for Council consideration. This presentation is the culmination of two full
days of work lead by facilitator Jermaine Davis. Over thirty staff members took part in the
development of the vision statement and goals. In addition, Councilmember Matt
Westgaard attended the second day of the session. Participants left enthused about the
vision and goals feeling very confident that their two days of intense thought about what Elk
River is today and what it can become in the future resulted in both a vision and set of goals
that fit those of the Council and the residents.
Mr. Davis led the staff through the process and kept staff fully engaged the entire two days.
It was an opportunity for staff from all departments and divisions to work together to help
guide the future of the City. It is interesting to note that even though there were six groups
working independently at times all groups came up with similar ideas and concepts about the
City and what they felt was important as the City moves forward. It was very obvious that
the employees are passionate about their work and the City.
Finally, following adoption of the vision and goals by the Council, staff will begin working
on the next step, developing action steps to achieve each of the goals. Implementation is
critical; we want to have our actions tied to reaching the goals set by the Council. Decisions
by staff and Council should support the goals and forward the achievement of those goals.
The contract with Mr. Davis includes afollow-up session to check in on our progress in
implementing the goals.
N:\Public Bodies\Ciry Council\Forms\Memoformat.doc
