~ity of

MEMORANDUM

River

FROM:
DATE:

Pat Klaers, City Administrator, Mayor
and Council
Bruce A. West ~~

December 31, 1996

SUBJECT: Hiring of Part Time Fire Inspection
Employees

The process of hiring part time Fire Inspectors has included advertising for
the inspector position and interviewing available candidates. At this time I
would like to submit to the council for approval the names Rob Dreissig,
Mike Crepeau and Terry Elliott for the position of part time Fire Inspector
for the City of Elk River.

The part time Fire Inspectors will do inspections in commercial and
industrial businesses throughout the city of Elk River. The part time
Inspector shall set up appointments, conduct inspections, and submit
required reports in reference to the inspection. There shall be approximately
20-24 hours per week of inspections to be completed by the part time Fire
Inspectors. With the hiring of the three part time Fire Inspectors, along with
their varied hours of availability, the inspectors collectively shall complete
approximately 1,000-1,200 hours of inspections during the year of 1997. It
will be my goal to have each inspector complete between 350 and 400 hours
of inspections during 1997. After discussion with Assistant City
Administrator Lori Johnson, staff recommends the part time Fire Inspectors
be hired at $10.00 per hour.

Along with the part time Fire Inspectors, I will continue to do inspections
throughout the city of Elk River in commercial, industrial, new, and existing
facilities. I will also continue to do inspections in the schools, churches,
daycares, and senior citizens buildings. Follow up inspections in problem
areas will be completed by both the part time Fire Inspectors and myself. A
reminder to the Council, the newly hired Uniform Housing Code Inspector
will be conducting fire inspections in all multi-unit apartment buildings.
Uniform Housing Inspector Jim Davis accompanied me on a fire inspection of
an apartment building and we have reviewed the requirements for
conducting a fire inspection.

13065 Orono Parkway ° P.O.
