,.
"ty of REQUEST FOR ACTION
Elk.
Rlve
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ma or and Ci Council 3.5.
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Consent Se tember 20, 2010 effre A. Beahen, Chief of Police
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Request to Purchase Unmarked Squad Car Tim Simon, Finance Director
REVIEWED BY
Lori ohnson, Ci Admvustrator
ACTION REQUESTED
Council approval to purchase a replacement unmarked squad car for use by the police department. This
request was discussed during the 2011 budget review of the equipment replacement fund.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Council was given information during the 2011 budget discussions from Finance Director Tim
Simon concerning a vehicle replacement for the police department during the annual review of the
equipment replacement fund. The police department had been informed that they were being awarded a
Federal forfeiture from a 2001 criminal case in the amount of $22,900.
The discussion was to purchase a new Ford Explorer off of the State Contract. The current price for that
specific vehicle is $22,700 (plus sales tax and set-up costs). This vehicle would be used by the Police
Chief, replacing the 2003 Honda Accord which has just over 97,000 miles on it which was planned to be
replaced in 2011. That vehicle was a DWI forfeiture which was put into service in 2009. An unmarked
vehicle was then deleted from the 2010 Capital requests.
The Honda has provided one year of service, but it falls short in terms of size and carrying capacity for
police service use on a full time basis. The Explorer will provide ample room for the large amount of
equipment carried by the Chief as well as have the ability to carry more than two people.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The City has received the forfeited funds by wire on September 13, 2010. The set-up costs and other
funds needed to complete this purchase, such as sales tax, are available through the equipment
replacement fund.
This will have a positive impact on the 2011 equipment replacement budget, as the fleet committee has
anticipated the reduction of this capital request due to the forfeiture funds being available.
ATTACHMENTS
None
Action Motion by Second by Vote
C:\Documents and Settings\XPMUser\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK66\Action Requested Ford Explorer.doc
