MEMORANDUPI

Item #

4.3o

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SU BJ ECT.'

Mayor and City Council
Admi(~'~Lrator r
Pat Klaers, City i_1/~.._
October 22, 2001

Consider Request for Soil Borings at City Hall

As previously discussed with the City Council, there are two main options being evaluated for
expansion of the City Hall/Police Station. One of these options includes a separate police and
EOC facility across our exisfng parking lot to the west. This option may or may not include a
connected satellite fire station. In order to better determine the financial viability of this
option it would be beneficial to have soil borings taken around this building site. This would
allow the architect to determine if a basement was feasible which would impact a number of
the building options, especially as it relates to a gun range, storage space, and future expansion
opportunities.

Regardless of how or when the expansion moves forward, I think it would be beneficial for
our long-range campus planning to have soil borings completed for this area. Assuming a
project moves forward, this cost would ultimately be wrapped into the total project. In the
short term the cost would come out of the government buildings fund.

Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council authorize soil borings west of City Hall at a cost not
to exceed $5000 based on the low quote obtained by Tushie Montgomery Architects.
