Both conferences are
fully funded, including airfare, hotel, meals and incidentals.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Recently the police department was asked to submit an application for the Fall 2010 National Institute of
Justice Rural Law Enforcement Technology Conference being held for three days in Coronado,
California in October 2010. The purpose of this conference in to bring agencies from across the United
States who represent departments of 50 or less officers, and whose agencies are not within metropolitan
areas, to a conference setting to share best law enforcement practices amongst like sized agencies. We are
asked to apply and to attend, if accepted, to discuss our computer statistical based crime analysis
(COMPSTAT) program.
An application was due three days after I received the solicitation. I did apply, and was notified two days
later on July 1, that our application had been accepted and approved.
In addition, I was invited to attend the 2010 National Summit for Small Law Enforcement Agencies
which is also being hosted by the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center, a
division of the Officer of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice. NLECTC was formed in 1994
to bring a stronger voice to small, rural, tribal, and border law enforcement agencies. In that capacity, they
represent almost 95% of the police departments in the United States.
The National Summit is being held in Fort Myers, Florida August 2-5, 2010. Again, all expenses are paid.
The purpose of this summit is to bring together Chiefs and Sheriffs of small law enforcement agencies
from across the nation to identify collectively the common issues applicable specifically to the smaller law
enforcement agencies and to develop a plan for better national representation and a collective voice for
expressing those concerns on a national level.
Examples of other departments attending including Clearlake WI, Old Saybrook CT, Moscow ID,
Yankton SD, Gulf Breeze FL, and many more.
Attendees will have a chance to meet with COPS staff regarding grant funding opportunities, as well as
other federal representatives concerning future funding support for smaller agencies.
C:\Documents and Settings\XPMUser\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK66\Action Requested.doc
